IN-DEPTH 6 WEEK THROWING COURSE
During this 6-week course you will be taught a variety of skills to enable you to throw with confidence. This will include: the preparation of clay, coning, centering, making a variety of shapes to includ lids and handles, turning and glazing. This course will also teach you how to recycling/repurposing leftover clay, apply colour in the form of oxides, slips and underglazes as well as give you access to the wide range of glaze colours/effects at The Pottery.
During this course you will:
Week 1 – be given a full induction into The Pottery. Be taught how to wedge and recycle your clay. Shown how to cone, centre and form using the potter’s wheel. We will work on your ability to control the clay to make it do what you want it to do.
At the end of the session you will select up to 3 pieces to keep.
Week 2 – be shown how to ‘turn/fettle the work from the previous week. You will be shown how to make handles, spouts and feet. You will be taught ancient decorating techniques using slips and sgraffito.
Week 3 – You will have the opportunity to practice your learnt skills by creating 2 pieces that are identical in size and shape. You will be challenged to make the best use of the quantity of clay that you are using,. Your skills will develop as you learn to ‘talk’ to the clay.During this session you might make many more as you practice but you will be selective and only choose 2 to take forward.
Week 4 - Building on skills learnt so far you will be encouraged to develop techniques to refine shape and size.
Week5 and 6 – You will have the opportunity to work on an individual project to hone skills already learnt. At the end of week 4 you would have created a family of up to 4 vessels to be fettled on week 5. There will be demonstrations on handles and spouts if appropriate.
There will be a maximum of 6 people on this course. Each person will be given their own dedicated wheel and plenty of table space for the duration of the class. During this course each person will make up to 9 pieces. For those who wish to make extra pieces there may be a small charge to help with our glazing and electricity costs.

Unfortunately in the current climate I will be unable to offer a refund if you change your mind so please do not book unless you are sure that you can attend all sessions. However if you change your mind for any reason you can gift the whole course to a third party.
